How To Avoid Looking Clueless

Image
The most recent reading in my social media principles class from The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick, was titled “How To Avoid Looking Clueless.” I saw this and thought, “Perfect! This is exactly what I need to know!” because a lot of the time, I still feel clueless when it comes to social media, how best to use it, and all the latest updates and trends. However, I was surprised when I read, that this chapter had some specific dos and don’ts when it comes to internet etiquette, but from my perspective, a lot of it had to do with simply being respectful to yourself and others.             For a lot of people (and I am one of them), there’s this anxiety around the internet because whatever you put out there, everyone can see and it never goes away. Now, there are some instances where this is not true; there are privacy settings, especially on social media. But still, the fear is there. This causes a lot of people to consider very carefully what the

A Weekend of A Cappella

Image
Have you ever been to a pop a cappella concert? No, going to see Pitch Perfect doesn’t count. A live a cappella concert is much more amazing! I had the pleasure this weekend of going to two pop a cappella concerts, and what a great weekend it was. Me and one of my friends during an a cappella performance!             For those that might not know, a cappella music is music that is created only with the human voice and mouth. Barbershop quartets do this, and there are some classical choirs that also sing a cappella. But with the rise of pop music, a cappella groups formed to do covers of songs they heard on the radio, only with their voices and a beatboxer or vocal percussionist who creates the drum sound with their mouth.   It might sound strange if you’ve never heard it before, but when a cappella music is done well, it leaves you in awe at the excellent musicianship, balance, and creativity that goes into it, and the powerful sound that you hear. 2013 Vega walking the

Hear Her Harvard

In college, one of the many joys is being able to join a major, a club, a sport, or a group of some sort that makes you feel at home, loved, and empowered. What would you do if that was threatened to be taken away from you, or you were threatened to be punished if you continued to be a part of it? This is currently happening at Harvard University. The school has recently issued sanctions against certain single-gendered social clubs; in the grand scheme of things they are threatening to eliminate the clubs altogether, but for now they are instead punishing all members of these clubs, banning them from holding leadership positions in other campus organizations such as being a captain on a sports team, and it also bans them from being recommended for academic fellowships such as the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. So, what is their reasoning for doing all this? Harvard has struggled to deal with certain problems in their fraternities, such as exclusive attitudes, alcohol abuse, and s

Me, a Social Media Beginner

Image
I am one of those people who it takes a solid two days to decide to post a selfie on Instagram. So, the fact that I have published three blog posts in the span of three days is honestly baffling to me. Hi, my name is Adelyn Helms and I am a social media beginner. I didn’t get any form of social media until after I graduated high school, and have been going slowly in a game of catch-up ever since. I’m initially hesitant in putting myself out there, but I find that I enjoy it when I do, so I would like to be able to use social media as a tool of self expression as well as marketing and growing my personal brand and business. So, I’m taking a class on the principles of social media and its already proved to be helping me. We are currently reading The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick, and it has tons of tips and tricks when it comes to how to set up your social media and what content to post. Their goal is “to enable you to rock social media.” Surprisingly,
